Another week has passed in the JDIL and as usual it certainly didn’t disappoint.
The pre-game hype was concentrated over the battle for the league’s top spot between captains Ben Rolison and Dan Richards; two of the league’s most experienced and consistent individuals.
The ongoing rivalry between these two greats set the scene for an epic and gladiatorial battle.
Early in the day Rolison secured the first captains pick after an impressive 6 on the dice roll. Within minutes 2 out of the top 3 players found their way into Rolison’s camp. After what was arguably the toughest captains pick yet, the teams emerged, and to displeasure of Richards’ team, they looked the underdog.
Throughout the build up to the game the pressure proved too much for some; Gareth Evans of the Snakes feigned illness in an effort to remove himself from the match and our resident OAP – Mark Kennard needed to ensure that his boiler was fixed in order for the old timer to make it through the harsh British winter.
Nevertheless, the captains rallied, and after some considerable effort replacements were found and the game was indeed 'on'.
The game began and immediately Team Richards was off to a 1-0 lead after a great solo effort from the captain, affectionately known to his fans as the ‘Chubby Jew’. Passionate performances from all of Richards teammates and a sterling vocal performance from Barry ‘the voice’ Manchip helped the underdogs fend off the pressure from the talented trio of Bravo, Rolison and Topliss who were ably assisted by teammates; Croucher, Zabarowski, Baker and debutant Donnelly. The strength of character from Team Richards and goals from Manchip, Carruthers and Richards secured a first half lead of 9-3.
The second half began with controversy, accusations of Richards spending too long between the sticks had Team Rolison riled. Unfortunately for Team Rolison they unable to channel their frustrations into a positive performance. Instead they visibly beaten, both mentally and physically. A stunning second half performance from Carruthers, Leighfield and Spratt allowed Team Richards to stretch their lead further.
Despite their best efforts, the pre-game favourites could not penetrate the solid defensive line of Wiseman and Spratt, led excellently by the inexperienced Allen. The final nail in the coffin came from a wonder strike off the laces of the now injured Leighfield – a sure contender for goal of the season. The victory sees Captain Richards return to the top of the JDI League, separated from Carruthers by 2 games in hand.
It’s not the size of the dog in the fight but the size of the fight in the dog.
